Movie Review: The Call

The Call (2013)

Starring: Halle Berry, Abigail Breslin, Morris Chestnut and Micheal Eklund
Summary: A veteran 911 operator must confront a killer from the past to save a young girl's life.

My Thoughts: Its rare when I movie like this comes along, I mean, a good thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. This movie did that for me. It was a new take on this kind of movie where you have the actual 911 operator trying to help the person in need. I saw a movie Cellular and a woman had this random person who just happened to be Chris Evans to help her.

In The Call, Jordan, the 911 operator, gets a call from a young girl about a break in taking place in her home.  The young girl successfully gets away from the robber and then the phone hangs up. Jordan calls her back, alerting the robber who kidnaps, the girl. Later, her body comes up dead. Six months later, another young girl, Abigail Breslin, is abducted from a mall and soon Jordan realizes it's the same man who kidnapped and murdered the other girl.

So the movie is told from basically two points, from the young girl, Casey's POV, from the trunk of the kidnapper's car and Jordan at the call center, directing Casey to help guarantee her safety.  Abigail was ace at this role. The emotion from her definitely made me believe her acting skills. And then Halle Berry as the operator was terrific as well. Just like the actual people who do this job, she was calm in the face of danger. I mean, a girl got freaking kidnapped. I'd be hyperventilating and yelling and she'd probably be dead if I were on the phone with her, but Halle was calm. She had her moments, but ultimately you could believe this was HER job. That was this film's greatest thing. The acting. It showed how HARD the people who really do this work because its damn stressful.

My favorite part of the movie was when Halle Berry's character gets her hair wet and that bird's nest of a hair comes down. Just kidding! But looking at her was hard, but because of her damn hair! There are other things to enjoy about it though.

Then towards the end it fell apart. As the killer gets his place, things slow down, but not in a good way. His motive is really not explained as it should and also the clues, they were everywhere, but there wasn't enough detail behind them to even explain why and what they were about. Another down side of this movie. But it's ultimately a great film.

The ending brought it back to life for me, I really loved it. I didn't see it coming as much, but it was still a good ending.
